Cattle egret with rare red mutation spotted in India
A rare mutation of reddish colored Cattle egret was spotted near Kendrapada in eastern India Odisha.
The reddish bird was spotted foraging along with normal coloured Cattle egret birds.
A local journalist Subas Swain and his friend Smarendra Mahali filmed the unusual bird and thought it was an unknown migratory bird.
They sent its photos and video to Subhendu Mallik, Honorary Wildlife Warden Khordha, who who identified it as a mutant Cattle egret.
Subhendu Mallik said "This mutation called Erythrism is very rare. It may turn an animal's hair, skin, feathers or eggshells red."
