Indian officials rescued a drunk man on Saturday (July 31) who came dangerously close to being washed away as he tried to cross a flooded bridge.

Many roads and bridges in the Guna district of central India have been submerged in recent days due to heavy rains.

Khuman Bhil, a resident of a Sirsi village, was seen trying to cross fast-flowing flood waters on Saturday afternoon.

After taking a few steps, Bhil, who locals said was drunk, realised that he was in danger of being swept away and desperately started looking for something to hold onto.

Luckily for him, a team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was at the spot and rushed to help him.

“The man was terrified and hanging on to a stone. It was an ordeal to make him loosen his grip and come with us,” said one of the rescuers.

Luckily for him, an team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) officials, who were at the spot rushed to help him. They shouted at him to return and then approached the man clinging on to a stone for his dear life. They then tied him to a rope and carried him to safety.

A rescue official said: “The man was terrified and hanging on to a stone. It was an ordeal to make him loosen his grip and come with us.”
