This is the moment scattered wildfires burned through the hillside of a tourist destination in Greece.

Footage shows flames ravaging several parts of Rhodes island – known for beach resorts and ancient ruins – on August 1.

Onlooker Sanne said: ‘This breaks my heart. Left Rhodes tonight, an hour after the fire started, and this is what we saw from the plane.’

Rhodes is located near Turkey, where firefighters are struggling to contain massive wildfires that have burned almost 95,000 hectares of land and left at least eight people dead.

Wildfires are also raging in neighbouring Spain and Italy due to what is reportedly the worst heatwave Europe has seen in decades bringing extreme temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.
