Firefighters battled to extinguish the flames as wildfires burned through a nature reserve in Italy.

Footage shows dark smoke sweeping over the 53-hectare nature reserve Pineta Dannunziana while confused tourists watched emergency services head to the hills in Pescara province on August 1.

Firefighting aircraft were also seen flying back and forth carrying extinguishers as black smoke rose from the reserve.

At least five were reportedly injured, while more than 800 were evacuated out of the criticals zones. Firefighters were still struggling to put out the fire in the area.

Wildfires continue to burn across Italy affecting neighbouring countries Spain, Greece and Turkey as heatwave bring extreme temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.
