Greece is baking under the heatwave with 45-48 °C in its worst heatwave since 1987. The intense heat has helped fan wildfires that have destroyed more than 3,000 hectares of pine and olive groves all over the country. As the southern European nation battles hundreds of wildfires, Prime Minister Mitsotakis has warned that the country is facing its worst heatwave in 30 years. Extreme weather in 1987 claimed more than 1,500 lives. His comments came as firefighters across the country battled to get hundreds of wildfires under control. "We are facing the worst heatwave since 1987... [causing] a burden on the electricity network," Mitsotakis told journalists on Monday.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday 3/8/2021, thousands of people have fled their homes north of Athens after a forest wildfire reached residential areas. The hurried evacuations took place just as Greece grappled with its worst heatwave in decades. The blaze sent a huge cloud of smoke over Athens and prompted multiple evacuations near Tatoi, 13 miles to the north. Residents left their homes in cars and on motorcycles, heading toward the capital in a blanket of smoke.
