Pro-democracy Belarusians in London unfurl 'Free Belarus' protest banner on Westminster Bridge
Supporters of the pro-democracy Belarusian movement protested on August 8th in London's Parliament Square before moving to Westminster Bridge where a 'Free Belarus' banner was unfurled. The historical Belarusian red and white flag was waved in opposition to leader Alexander Lukashenko who has been in power since 1994. In the country's 2020 election, the European Union raised concerns the ballot was neither 'free not fair.
Mass protests followed the election where it was estimated 35,000 people were arrested and the clamping down of dissent continues with the targeting of journalists and activists.
