Watch as these three tortoises ravenously tear into a watermelon feast!
Watch as three tortoises, each over 100 years old, almost 'sprint' to tear into hunks of watermelon at San Antonio Zoo in Texas.
Bruno, George and Edie can be seen devouring the sweet summer fruit in their play pen.
The reptiles seemed delighted to be eating the snack, chomping on the fruit and dribbling juice on the ground, before going in for another bite.
While tortoises are normally considered slow creatures, two of these three centenarians sprinted like hares when the zookeepers put out the delicious fruit.
A spokesperson from the reptile department said: “The watermelon is sweet and fruits are a novel food naturally.
“The red is also a visual attractant to the tortoises, which is common with many reptiles that eat fruits and flowers.”
The watermelons were donated by Eco Centro, a center for environmental stability in San Antonio, and were given to animals all across the zoo as part of a special initiative.
This video was filmed within August 2021.
