An unusual sight – the Swan River in flood at Walyunga National Park August 2021
According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), July was the wettest July in decades across Perth and its surrounds, with rain falling on 28 of the 31 days of that month. River flows have reduced by around 70% from the mid-1970s, forcing Perth to augment its water supply from groundwater and seawater desalination. The declining river flows have been attributed climate change caused by global warming. The winter of 2021 produced more rain than people had experienced in years. The rain penetrated well to the east into the agricultural region causing the level of the Avon River that feeds into the Perth’s Swan River to rise significantly. There was minor flooding at several points along the Swan-Avon, including in Walyunga National Park in the hills to the northeast of the city. This video was shot on August 11 2021, as the Swan River flowed bank-full through the park.
