A major earthquake struck western Haiti on Saturday 14 August, causing widespread destruction.

The quake sent shock waves across the Caribbean and is likely to have caused high casualties. People fled their homes for fear they might collapse.

The 7.2-magnitude earthquake quake struck 8km (5 miles) from the town of Petit Trou de Nippes, about 150 km west of the capital Port-au-Prince, at a depth of 10km, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The video shows collapsed buildings, including a hotel.
