Sikhs, Kashmiris and pro-farmer groups hold London protest on India Independence Day

Hundreds of Sikhs, Kashmiris and groups backing protesting Indian farmers held a protest in central London on Sunday 15 August.

The day is the 75th anniversary of India's independence.

Demands included freedom for Kashmir, independence for Punjab ('Khalistan') and support for Indian farmers who opposed plans to liberalise agricultural markets.

Those plans, put on hold by India's Supreme Court, would allow farmers to sell directly to private buyers, not just government-controlled markets. The government said the reforms would reduce corruption, improve efficiency and attract investment, but many farmers opposed them.

Piers Corbyn, brother of former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, was among the protesters. He is also known for his anti-vaccine and conspiracy-theorist views about 5G and Covid-19.
