Thunderstorms caused flash floods in northern Thailand at the weekend.

Continuous downpours along the Thailand and Myanmar border lead to a deluge which swamped villages in Tak province on August 15.

Hours of heavy rain push forest waters in the foothills to flow into Mae Sot creek, overflowing into the Chumphon Khiri community, Chok Cho community, and others in Mae Sot municipality.

Panicked villagers raced to their homes and shops to move their belongings to higher grounds as the sudden flooding hit when residents were resting during covid curfew time.

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
