A tiger "died from dehydration" after the animal was found in a deteriorating state in Sontang forest, Indonesia.

Footage from August 14, filmed by Salamat Simamora, shows nearby residents attempting to help the exhausted tiger.

The Natural Resources and Conservation Center were called to the scene and arrived with a cage and a veterinarian to help.

Unfortunately, the tiger was declared dead just a few hours after it was taken to an animal centre.


Head of the West Sumatra KSDA, Ardi Andono, said that according to the veterinarian the tiger was thought to have died due to severe dehydration.

"The Sumatran tiger was treated by medical personnel from the Dua Koto Health Center with a high body temperature, black faeces and then given medication and vitamins," Andono added.

Local residents in Indonesia found a wild Sumatran tiger in a weak condition.

In footage filmed on Saturday (August 14) in the vicinity of the Sontang forest, Pasaman district, West Sumatra province, locals huddled around a weak-looking Sumatran tiger.

Salamat Simamora, a member of the Pasaman Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) who filmed the footage of the tiger's discovery, said residents saw a sick tiger sleeping near a dam.

"The tiger is in a weak condition, it is suspected that it is sick. People who were initially afraid finally approached the tiger as they wanted to help him," said Salamat.

Salamat reported the video of the findings and the condition of the tiger to the Natural Resources and Conservation Center (BKSDA) officer, which was followed up.

The BKSDA team came to the location with a cage and a veterinarian to help, but a few hours after being taken to the animal health center, the tiger was declared dead.

Head of the West Sumatra KSDA Ardi Andono said, from the results of the video analysis and according to the veterinarian, the tiger was thought to have died due to severe dehydration.

"The Sumatran tiger was treated by medical personnel from the Dua Koto Health Center with a high body temperature, black feces and then given medication and vitamins," Ardi added.

According to Ardi, the BKSDA could not carry out a necropsy to determine the cause of the tiger's death because it was prohibited by local residents.
