Biology experts discover a rare baby sea turtle - with TWO heads!
Experts were surprised when they found a rare baby sea turtle - with TWO heads.
Staff were carrying out routine sea turtle nest excavations when they spotted the four-eyed tiny creature and helped it to the sea.
Biological technicians from Cape Hatteras National Seashore made the discovery just north of the village of Avon, North Carolina on the morning of August 16.
They were excavating a hatched nest to count empty eggshells and collect unhatched eggs for research.
Live sea turtle hatchlings are occasionally discovered when female sea turtles travel to the shores to nest.
In the video you can see the two-headed loggerhead sea turtle frantically move its limbs in a breast-stroke motion as if it were swimming in the ocean.
Thankfully the hatchling was healthy and safely released into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after the video was taken.
A marine expert for Cape Hatteras National Seashore said: "Each spring and summer, female sea turtles--loggerhead, green, and occasional leatherback--make a brief trip to the shores of Cape Hatteras National Seashore to nest.
"Approximately two months later, under the cover of darkness, sea turtle hatchlings emerge from each sandy nest in a mad dash across the beach to reach the safety of the ocean.
"We were pleased that we could help this little fella by walking him across the sand and setting him free in the Atlantic."
