A rare surgery performed on a patient has set a new milestone in the field of health and innovation in northern India's Himachal Pradesh on August 25. The incident took place at the Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital in Shimla.

Visuals feature the team of doctors performing the rarest kind of neurosurgery in the operation theatre of the hospital. The doctors further remove the tumor from the left side of his brain while a person from the team asks the patient to open his eyes and keep moving his hands during conversations. However, after the successful surgery, the patient walks in the hallway as he looks visibly fit without any sedation.

At Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), a patient’s brain tumor was successfully operated on with the conscious craniotomy technique. The aware craniotomy is a surgical procedure in which the patient is not completely unconscious during the operation. Doctors prefer this method because they can communicate with the patient during the surgery and get information about their current condition. It was the first such operation performed in this hospital. The surgery was performed after talking to the patient for about four hours in the operation theatre.

During the operation, the patient remained fully conscious while his team kept instructing him to move his arms and legs, which the patient understood. Fortunately, the patient is now healthy and fit. Earlier, he was brought to IGMC in July after being diagnosed with the disease. The patient was having seizures and was admitted on August 21. Moreover, the surgery was performed by Dr. Janak Raj, Senior Medical Superintendent of IGMC, along with Dr. Gyan, Dr. Himani, Dr. Vineet, Dr. Vikram, Head of Anesthesia Dr. Ajay Sood, Dr. Ramesh, Dr. Manoj, Operation Theater Assistant Anil Shandil, and Staff Nurse Anita.
