In a bizarre incident in central India on 29 August, people rushed to loot buckets of sand from a pile of the stuff that was itself stolen from a sanctuary forest.

The event took place in Shikarganj in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh.

Video shows scores of people filling sacks and buckets with sand from the pile.

They rush to and from the site on scooters and bikes, taking the sands to their homes and coming back for more. Several are laughing and squealing.

The incident happened after a vehicle carrying illegal sand from the Son Gharial Sanctuary Forest emptied the sand on the roadside.

As soon as villagers came to know about it, they decided to help themselves.
