Riot police blocked the highway from Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, after angry protests in the city of Cetinje against a new Serbian Orthodox Church archbishop, on Saturday 4 September.

Video shows kilometre-long convoys of cars on the outskirts of the city as the police blocked almost all roads leading to Cetinje, the country's old capital.

Police clashed with protesters in Cetinje as they tried to block the enthronement of a new Serbian Orthodox Church archbishop. They tore down security fences and threw stones at police, who responded with tear gas.

The ceremony planned for Sunday angered opponents of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro, which declared independence from neighbouring Serbia in 2006.

Since then, pro-independence Montenegrins have advocated for a recognised Orthodox Christian church separate from the Serbian one.

Local media reports that the enthronement went ahead on Sunday.
