RESTRICTION SUMMARY: APAwire, Khan Yunis– 05 September, 2021. Palestinians work on the largest fishing boat in Khan Yunis in the southern of Gaza Strip.

0.1 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) fisherman Abu Mohammad Alwan

STORYLINE:

Palestinians made the largest fishing boat in the Gaza Strip, 21 meters long and 6 meters wide, with simple tools and equipment.

The Palestinians in the strip have no control over its borders, territorial waters or airspace and face shortages of basic food and medicine and mass unemployment.

The Israeli forces navy regularly fires on Palestinian fishermen and confiscates their boats and fishing gear, so much so that it has been deemed a "dangerous" profession by rights organisations.

Last year alone, Israeli occupation forces attacked Palestinian fishermen off the coast of the Gaza Strip on at least 320 occasions, the Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC) reported, 63 more than in the previous year. Israel also closed the fishing zone altogether for 16 days last August.
