Authorities in Indonesia have rescued an endangered wild pangolin that was seen by residents roaming around the city of Padang today (September 8).

The protected animal was found in the densely populated Tabing area of the city.

The young male creature was due to be handed over to West Sumatra's Nature Conservation Agency to be checked over by vets.

"After that it will usually be released back into its habitat," explained conservation manager Pati Hariyose.

Pangolins are threatened by poaching for their meat and scales, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine.

They are the most trafficked mammals in the world.
