A teacher in northeastern India has been forced to hold classes in a boat amid severe flooding in parts of his state.

Pankaj Kumar Sah works in the Manihari area of Bihar state which has been submerged by floodwaters for several months.

Concerned that his pupils had already missed out due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sah decided to pile his class into a wooden boat and continue their education.

Footage filmed on September 7 showed Sah and another teacher valiantly pressing on with the curriculum with at least 30 students crowded into two rickety vessels with floodwaters all around them.

"We had no other option," says Sah.

"Floodwaters were there for six months and we can not skip classes," he adds.

"We will continue taking classes on boats while the water remains," he says.
