A firefighter has died in a wildfire that has ripped through 2,200 hectares near Sierra Bermeja, Spain.

Footage from September 9 and 10 shows aerial firefighters attempting to douse the flames that were producing columns of thick smoke near Sierra Bermeja.

According to reports, the firefighter was a 44-year-old who travelled from Almeria to help with fire-extinguishing tasks.

A wildfire has forced the evacuation of more than 900 people from around the southern Spanish resort of Estepona, local authorities said on Thursday. The blaze started on Wednesday around 9:30 p.m. and has since burned through around 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of the densely forested area known as the Sierra Bermeja, according to the emergency services.

A firefighter died during efforts to extinguish a wildfire that broke out on Wednesday night in Sierra Bermeja, in southern Málaga province, and had burnt through 3,600 hectares of land by early Friday morning. Sources from the Andalusian regional authorities confirmed that the victim was 44 years old and a resident in Almería. He had previously participated in at least six campaigns with the region’s forest fire team.
