A car was almost swept by gushing floodwater after a nearby river overflowed to a village in the Philippines during Typhoon Conson.

Footage shows a red sedan struggling to move past the muddy deluge after being trapped as shocked onlookers called the rescuers in Batangas province, the Philippines on September 8.

After about 15 minutes, the water receded letting the driver and his wife come out of the vehicle safely before the car was tied with a rope to prevent it from being washed away.

Onlooker Mae Garcia said: ‘The water always passes by here whenever the river overflows. We did not know what to do when we saw the car trapped in the water.’

The Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods which cause rivers to flow faster and become dangerous.
