A fisherman miraculously survived after drifting for five days in the sea without food or water.

Gaudencio Caberio, 61, was sailing to catch fish on his pump boat when he was met with strong winds during typhoon Conson off the coast of Guiuan in Eastern Samar province, the Philippines in September 5.

Tidal waves struck the man’s boat before it overturned leaving him alone and stranded in the rough waters without supplies.

After drifting in the sea for five days, a passing fishing boat came upon the lost fisherman near Suluan Island and rescued him on September 10.

A rescue volunteer from the municipal disaster risk management office said: ‘We have been on a search and rescue mission since the first 24 hours he was reported missing.

‘However our search was hampered by the typhoon until fishermen found him near Suluan Island. He was assisted back to his family now.’

After receiving a medical assessment, Gaudencio returned to his family as he was in stable condition despite being dehydrated.

He also thanked the other fishermen as well as rescuers who saved him and helped pull his broken pump boat back to the shore.

The Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods which cause rivers to flow faster and become dangerous.
