ICYMI: Nearly 1,000 players attempt world record for largest rugby lesson in UK
An amateur rugby club in England says it has broken the world record for the largest number of participants in a single lesson.
Long Eaton RFC in Nottinghamshire on Sunday (September 19) hosted 999 participants for a 30-minute rugby union lesson. According to the club's Facebook account, the previous record for the largest single training session was 720, set in Japan. The club hopes the attempt will be officially recognised by Guinness World Records.
Even England head coach Eddie Jones was in attendance.
Club president Duncan Gooch said: “We’re aiming to get 1,000 people to take part [in the world record attempt]. We’re doing it to try to raise funds to extend our clubhouse to support the community. The last 18 months have been really difficult for everyone in our community. Having something to rally around has been really important. So taking part in rugby, being part of that community sport, has been so valuable.”
The club has three men’s teams, an occasional veterans side, a women's’ team and girls’ teams at U13, U15 and U18 as well as boys youth teams. As a result, the club has outgrown their current clubhouse and are planning an extension next spring.
Long Eaton RFC tweeted on Sunday: "We are overwhelmed by the support received today; far exceeding our expectations with the number of participants. A huge community event raising funds to improve our facilities! Thank you to all the volunteers for their help today & in the planning. Rugby at its best."
