A British citizen living in La Palma, Spain, shared the moment the island's Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted on September 19.

Footage shows the spurts of lava illuminating the night sky. A daytime clip recorded from El Paso shows a column of ash rising into the air.

Newsflare's filmer explained: "I'm a British citizen with South African roots. I'm a digital nomad. I live and work remotely. I look at eco-sociology solutions to the world's problems.

"I've been in La Palma since Nov 2020. This video is filmed from a co-working space where I'm currently working."

Reports have said that 5,000 have been evacuated as a 15-metre-high lava flow swallows houses in its path.

Flights have also been cancelled as a result of the clouds of ash emitted by the volcano.
