The Indian city of Kolkata was left submerged after it experiences its heaviest September rainfall in 14 years.

Footage from September 20 shows cars struggling to drive through submerged sections of road.

The city received 142 millimetres of rain, the highest since September 2007 when 174 millimetres was recorded.

Heavy rains, triggered by a cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal, lashed Kolkata and its surrounding areas since Sunday night, inundating large parts of the city on Monday and led to suspension of circular rail operation, few long-distance trains getting rescheduled apart from disruptions in road traffic.

The video shows streets of Kolkata being flodded after heavy rains. The weather department said that it had never rained as much in Kolkata on a single day in September in the last 14 years. Till 8:30 am, Kolkata received around 142 mm rain, the highest since September 25, 2007, when 174 mm rain was recorded.
