The Canary Islands Volcanology Institute recorded a magnitude 4.2 quake that occurred the eruption.

Authorities said they have evacuated 5,500 people as the lava stream reached the nearby town of Los Llanos de Aridane.

No injuries or casualties have been reported so far, but much damage to property is expected.

Canary Islands government chief Angel Victor Torres said: ‘There will be considerable material damage. We hope there won’t be any personal injuries.’
