Konthang in the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya is known as the whistling village as each residents' name is a unique song.

Visuals from September 26 show the locals communicating with each other in an amazing whistling language.

The tradition begins where the mother composes a tune, known locally as "Jingrwai iwabei", for their child.

This song will become the child's identity among the village and only the locals are able to recognise it.

India's Ministry of Tourism selected the village for entry into the World Tourism Organization's Best Tourism Villages.

Konthang is a remote village in the northeastern state of Meghalaya. In this village in Meghalaya, everyone is called by a unique whistling tune. This village has a tradition where the mother composes music or tune for their children known as "Jingrwai iwabei" in the local language. Each person in the village has a name and a unique tune and this village is also known as the whistling village of India.

With a population of 700 villagers, this village is recently nominated for the World Tourism Organization’s Best Tourism Villages award by the Indian Tourism Department. Following their age-old traditions, the residents in this village still communicate with their children and with their fellow villagers by making sounds and singing.

The villagers say, every time a baby is born, the mother composes a lullaby that becomes a unique identity of the child for life. The lullaby has no words and is just is a tune, a kind of hum that only the villagers are able to recognize and remember. The mothers of the village use these melodious tunes to call out to their children, who learn to respond to them quickly.

The Ministry of Tourism has selected Meghalaya's Kongthong village, which is also known as the ‘whistling village’, for entry to UNWTO’s (The World Tourism Organisation) "Best Tourism Villages" award along with two other villages in the country.
