Highways across northeastern China were left in darkness as China suffers from an energy crisis.

Video filmed in the city of Shenyang in Liaoning Province on September 23 shows hundreds of vehicles stuck in traffic jams as traffic lights turned off due to power outages.

According to reports, northeastern China's Jilin City and Heilongjiang City also suffered blackouts over the weekend with cuts to traffic lights wreaking havoc during rush hour.

The energy crisis has been caused by the increased price of coal, forcing the local authorities to cut power without notice in advance to save energy.

A resident named Mr Shi said the power cut was from 4 pm to 11 pm.

Jilin Xinbei Water Co., Ltd. said in a statement that power blackouts will continue at irregular times without planning or notice until March 2022.

The video was provided by local media with permission.
