Tropical storm Dianmu unleashed heavy rain across Chaiyaphum province in Thailand, triggering heavy floods and landslides over the weekend.

Footage shows heavy rain eroding part of a mountain road and causing limited visibility to motorists passing by as rescue officers were on standby.

Authorities said the province's government centre was swamped including the Chaiyaphum provincial hospital where medical personnel and patients had to be ferried on four pram boats brought by rescue personnel.

The storm also damaged sugarcane crops when a nearby dam overflowed in Thep Sathit District and brought the water level up to 70 centimetres.

Meanwhile, at least two landslides occurred in the province and resulted in heavy traffic jams. The first at Phu Lan Kha peak blocked off a road passing through the province and nearby areas. The second happened at Phu Langa mountain about 100 metres away. Local police said clearing operations are underway.

At least 10 provinces in Thailand, including Chaiyaphum, have been inundated by Dianmu, according to the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department of Thailand. The Thai Meteorological Department said rainfall is expected to subside within the week.

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
