John Steenhuisen and other leaders of South Africa’s opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, led a march calling for greater police powers for local law enforcement authorities. They do not want city law enforcement authorities to come under the control of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Party leader, John Steenhuisen, wants powers to be taken away from national policing authorities and devolved to local police authorities.

Geordin Hill-Lewis, the party’s mayoral candidate in Cape Town, says the party reject’s Bheki Cele’s (national police minister) proposal for a single national police force.

The party was confronted on the streets by members of the GOOD party who claimed the DA was grandstanding. GOOD is led by former DA mayor of the City, Patricia De Lille, who resigned from the DA in 2018. Brett Herron of GOOD is the part’s Cape Town mayoral candidate.
