The Grade II listed Sheerness town centre clock tower was towed away this morning (September 30) , so it can undergo renovation by specialists John Smith & Sons of Derby.

A report by Swale Council found the cast iron clock, which was built in 1902, had developed serious structural defects, requiring expert attention.

This is the first time the clock has been disassembled since 1902 (119 years), when it was erected to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII.
