Thai massage girls were delighted today as full-body massages were allowed again under relaxed Covid-19 rules.

The flagship service of Thailand and its capital Bangkok had been banned amid fears it could cause a rise in infections from customers visiting the parlours.

Cases surged to almost 23,000 a day in August leading to widespread closures and a 9pm curfew. However, falling numbers have convinced ministers to loosen restrictions.

Starting from October 1, full-body oil massages and soapy massages across the country were given the green light, allowing struggling workers to earn a living again.

With travel restrictions also set to ease further before the end of the year, massage girls said they were optimistic that customer numbers would rise in the coming months.

Ministers hope that a vaccine rollout will kick-start the struggling tourism-dependent economy but economists have warned that it could be another five years before the country’s tourism industry returns to pre-pandemic levels.

Two years ago tourism made up an estimated 21 per cent of Thailand’s GDP, generating 1.8 trillion baht in revenue. However, the country’s National Economic and Social Development Council predicted that it could be another five years before similar numbers are seen.

Analysts said that between now and 2026, around seven million workers will continue to be affected by the economic harm from the Covid-19 pandemic.
