Officials in Bangriposi, Odisha, used an excavator to rescue an elephant that had become trapped in an abandoned well.

The elephant had fallen down the pit after locals attempted to chase off a herd of elephants that had entered the village.

The elephant was rescued after a lot of hard work. With the help of JCB, the forest department rescued the elephant late at night by digging the well. According to the incident, an elephant was burnt in a well inside Tembatola village in Dhawanishola panchayat of Bangariposhi range last evening. Inside the well, the elephant snorted and tried to get out, but could not get out. The villagers immediately informed the Bangariposhi Forest Department and continued the rescue operation.

The elephant was rescued late at night with the help of JCB. The elephant is now reported to be in the nearby forest. In the evening, however, 8-10 elephants entered the village from the Shimlipal forest. Unfortunately one sub adult wild elephant felt in abandoned well while the villagers were chasing the elephants.
