Oil was coating the surface of the ocean off the coast of southern California on Monday (October 4) after a massive oil spill.

Mark Girardeau scooped up some of the oil to inspect it.

"We picked up some oil off Huntington Beach to see how nasty it is, it’s really thick and disgusting stuff," he said.

Oil began to build up on the beaches of southern California on Sunday (October 3) after 3,000 barrels' worth gushed into the Pacific Ocean from an offshore rig.

A pipeline breach occurred about 5 miles off the coast of Huntington Beach, said Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley.
