The leader of South Africa's official opposition party, John Steenhuisen of the Democratic Alliance (DA), has stated they do not support the Cape Independence movement. He says they do however support a referendum on the issue and has called for the devolution of power to provinces. The DA is South Africa's second largest party and politically controls the Western Cape, the only one of South Africa's nine provinces not controlled by the African National Congress (ANC). The Cape Independence Party, formerly the Cape Party, has called for the secession of the Western Cape from South Africa. The Cape Party contested elections since 2009 but has failed to win a single parliamentary seat.
