Palestinian protesters gathered in Jerusalem today (October 8) to voice their anger at an Israeli judge's decision this week that "quiet" Jewish prayer should be allowed at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound.

The decision sparked Palestinian anger over the Jerusalem religious site that is revered by Muslims and Jews.

Jews refer to the site as the Temple Mount, referencing two temples that stood there in antiquity.

The site is at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, falling within east Jerusalem, but administered by the Waqf Islamic affairs council.

A ruling by a local Israeli court in favour of a Jewish man who prayed quietly at the flashpoint Jerusalem holy site has angered Muslim authorities, who denounced it on Thursday (October 7) as a violation of the fragile status quo governing the compound.
