Indonesian authorities on Wednesday (October 6) released 583 birds back into the wild after seizing them from a suspected illegal collector.

Footage captured in Bikittinggi in West Sumatra Province showed officers from the conservation department transporting large cages full of birds to the Mount Merapi Nature Tourism Park where they were set free.

The birds were made up of 10 species, four of which are protected under Indonesian law, an official said.

According to officials, the birds were seized after arresting a man on October 5 suspected of involvement in the trade of wild animals.

The 49-year-old suspect faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

Hundreds of birds were released into their habitat after being rescued from suspected illegal bird collectors and sellers in Indonesia.

Footage filmed in Bukittinggi city, West Sumatra Province on Wednesday, October 6, Natural Resources Conservation (BKSDA) officers carry hundreds of birds in cages that are secured at the police station.

The birds were taken to the Mount Marapi Nature Tourism Park to be released into the wild.

Head of the Bukittinggi Conservation Resort, Vera Ciko, said the hundreds of birds were rescued from the arrests of suspected illegal bird collectors and sellers.

“All 583 birds. Of the 10 species of birds, four of them are protected animals with a total of 518," said Ciko.

The day before, the Police together with the NGO Flight Protecting Indonesia's Birds arrested Faisal (49) for allegedly trading protected animals, with evidence of 583 birds. The perpetrator faces up to 5 years in prison.
