Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate as the strongest floods in the past 40 years hit a city in northern China.

Video shot in the city of Yuncheng in Shanxi Province on October 7 shows dozens of residents fleeing and floodwater submerging the fields and buildings.

Over 100 households were affected and the direct financial loss was more than 16,000,000 yuan (£1,800,000).

受连日来降雨影响，山西汾河干流涨水明显，到7日上午7时左右，近40年来的最大洪峰进入运城市境内。洪水途径稷山县稷峰镇下费村段时，因河道狭窄漫过堤坝冲进农田，致使整个下费滩庄稼全部被淹没，受害村民100多户直接经济损失1600多万元。随着洪峰的邻近，村民在统一指挥下紧急撤离。截止发稿，汾河洪峰已进入运城稷山段，下费村已经进水。
据介绍，此次洪峰水量大、峰值高，受影响的河津、万荣、新绛、稷山沿线4县市在运城市防指的指挥调度下，采取了撤离5个村庄8000多人、加固险段堤防40.8公里、每100米安排一人蹲守巡查、备足编织袋等抢险物料和人员机械等办法，随时积极抢修出现险情的堤防。（视频由山西台提供）
