Thousands of ducks swept through a rice field in Thailand on Thursday 7 October, as farmers used them as a natural weapon against pests.

The brown flock were spotted waddling across a rice paddy in Nakhon Sawan province, while eating unwanted creatures among the crops, such as snails.

Onlooker Por Jomyong said: ‘It’s a win-win solution, the farmers will grow their crops healthy while the birds are fed and satisfied.’

Throngs of ducks are sometimes deployed by rice farmers in Thailand to ‘clean up’ fields after the crop has been harvested.

The practice, called ‘ped lai thoong,’ helps farmers get rid of pests still hiding in the stubble without using harmful chemicals or insecticides.
