Loyalists march from Trafalgar Square to UK parliament against Northern Irish Protocol with EU

Northern Irish loyalists marched in central London on Saturday 9 October against the Northern Irish Protocol.

A band and banner-carrying protesters marched from Trafalgar Square to Downing Street, home to the UK Prime Minister, and the British Parliament.

The protocol is a UK-EU agreement that means there's no need for checks along the land border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland is in the UK while the Republic of Ireland is in the EU.

The protocol therefore allows for some customs checks on goods going between the UK and Northern Ireland.

Loyalists say this amounts to putting the UK-Irish border in the Irish Sea, although they have not set out clear proposals for how this could be avoided.

One man at the protest in a high-viz jacket repeatedly and angrily ordered watching members of the public out of the way, despite not being a police officer.
