'Blackout crisis' in India as coal demand rises and states face possible power cuts

A coal shortage is affecting power plants in India, with several states, including Delhi, raising concerns over possible blackouts.

The shortage has been blamed on a hike in global coal prices.

Power plants across the country have started to slow power generation after stocks ran low.

Over half of the country's 135 coal-fired power plants, which in total supply around 70 per cent of the nation's electricity, have fuel stocks of less than two days, according to the power grid operator.

Tata Power Distribution Ltd (TPDDL), which supplies electricity to parts of the national capital, on Saturday warned of intermittent rotational power cuts.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal shot off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over "a power crisis" Delhi could face.

Jharkhand and Bihar are also among the worst affected by the coal shortage.

The footage was shot on Sunday 10 October in Jharia, Dhanbad, India.
