Residents in Mumbai, India, lined up to shop at the country's first 7-Eleven convenience store on Saturday 9 October.

Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s richest man according to Forbes, added 7-Eleven to his burgeoning Reliance Retail empire just days after troubled supermarket operator Future Retail Ltd. terminated its own agreement with the convenience store chain.

The store opened in a Mumbai suburb. It will soon be followed by others opening in India’s financial hub, Reliance Retail said in a statement Thursday.

Many products they offer will be localised to the Indian market.

Reliance Retail has entered into an agreement with US-based 7-Eleven Inc to open convenience stores in India. The retail giant said that this will be followed by a rapid roll out in key neighbourhoods and commercial areas across India. With a rapid expansion plan on the anvil, it is expected to be a significant contributor to local employment and building the eco-system for convenient foods, the company said.

7-Eleven will also support Reliance Retail Ventures Limited in implementing and localising the unique 7-Eleven convenience retail business model for India, including bringing its processes and practices.
