British engineer's 154th birthday celebrated by South Indians as thanks for work building a dam
A British engineer's 154th birthday was celebrated in an area of South India on Friday 8 October, as a mark of respect for his work building a dam.
Pechuparai dam is located in Kanniyakumari district of Tamil Nadu state. It was built during British rule in India. The chief engineer, Humphre Alexander Minchin, was born in 1868.
His dam is still in use for both irrigation and drinking purpose by the people of Nagercoil and locals show their gratitude to him by celebrating his birthday every year.
On that day they remember the engineer and convey their heartfelt gratitude by laying flowers and garlands on his memorial, near the dam.
