Chinese fighter jet crash lands in river as pilots parachute into water
A Chinese fighter plane with two people on board crashed into a river in Henan province on Friday, October 22.
Footage appears to show the pilots of the Chengdu J-10 two-seater fighter plane parachuting into the Jialu river as local fishermen watched in disbelief.
They are believed to have ejected while making an emergency landing and leaving the plane to hit water and skid onto the river bank.
The plane’s nose was reportedly wrecked, but it sustained no obvious damage to its fuselage. Eyewitnesses also reported that both pilots were safe.
Neither the local government nor the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) have commented on the incident or what caused the apparent crash landing.
The Chinese-made J-10 was produced for the PLAAF and is designed for air-to-air combat but may also be used for strike missions.
