Astonishing GoPro footage shows locals wading through a footbridge covered in hundreds of fish.

The creatures have been able to climb onto the walkway after heavy rain has caused the river to swell in Ayutthaya province, central Thailand.

Footage shows how visitors feed the large freshwater fish sending them into a frenzy on the metal bridge between the Wat Phanan Choeng Buddhist temple and a small riverboat pier.

Temple abbot Phra Maha Pakorn said that the water was unusually high this year resulting in the unusual attraction.

He added: ‘There has been a lot of rain and flooding recently. It has made the river swell so now people can see the fish. It’s not always like this, just when the river goes up and down.

‘People come to feed the fish because it brings good luck.’

Earlier this month, it emerged that diners were flocking to a restaurant on a riverbank on the outskirts of Bangkok because the swollen river was overflowing on the tables and chairs.
