British tourist arrested for ‘cannabis possession’ on Thai island
A British tourist has been arrested for allegedly possessing cannabis on a Thai island.
Paul Mathew Kennedy, 32, reportedly had the drug along with a grinder stashed in a shoulder bag, a TV cabinet drawer and a fridge at his home in Koh Samui in Surat Thani province.
He is said to have admitted that the drugs belonged to him when police raided his home late in the evening on Monday, October 25. He's seen in the video appearing to show police the evidence and describe that it belongs to him.
He tells a policeman: 'This is my ganja. This one from round here, local. Just me and girlfriend stay here, she actually, she at work, she got a shop.'
Officers said they were tipped off by concerned locals that the Brit had been using the drug. Police searched on social media for the suspect and noticed he had a business in the UK selling marijuana products.
Provincial immigration police chief Colonel Suparerk Phankosol said Kennedy was arrested and remanded in custody immediately after the raid.
The policeman said: ‘Our informants told us about the foreigner being involved with marijuana. The suspect was arrested at his home and identified as Paul Mathew Kennedy from the UK. He told us that he bought the marijuana from a Thai woman for 60,000 Baht.
‘Inside his house, we found dried crushed cannabis and a grinding device in a shoulder bag. He told us there was more on the second floor and we discovered it hidden in a drawer and in the fridge.’
Police said that Kennedy tested positive after a urine test. He was charged with the illegal possession of a category 5 drug and illegally using a category 5 drug.
