A Thai zoo celebrated the third birthday of an elephant born from artificial insemination.

Khao Kheow Open Zoo Director Tewin Rattanawongsawat and zoo staff organised the birthday celebration of the baby Asian elephant named Saen-Rak in Chon Buri province on October 28.

They brought a cake made from banana, sugarcane, corn, watermelon, guava, dragon fruit, and Napier grass for the female jumbo to consume. Zoo visitors were also invited to take part in the festivities.

Saen-Rak is the second elephant to be born from artificial insemination in Thailand.

Her mother, an Asian elephant named Jim, successfully gave birth to her with the help of the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Kasetsart University, and the National Elephant Institute.

Tewin said: ‘Saen-Rak is the second baby elephant to survive being born through artificial insemination in Thailand. We are more than happy to celebrate her third birthday at the zoo.’
