Customers play Squid Game Dalgona cookie challenge for free drinks at cafe
Squid Game fans played the dalgona cooking challenge from the Netflix hit show Squid Game – for free drinks at a cafe in the Philippines.
Footage shows a young boy carving out a circle in the middle of a piece of dalgona or honeycomb toffee in order to win freebies at Canto Uno cafe in Burauen, Leyte City, on October 25. The child was awarded an ice cream float for successfully completing his task.
Cafe owner Jovelyn Toreno, 33, said her business was struggling before she came up with the promo after watching the series.
She said: ‘I felt overwhelmed because a lot of customers came to our store and boosted our sales. We have been struggling for the past months but now we are getting back on track.’
The South Korean Netflix drama Squid Game tells the story of hundreds of participants struggling with debt who compete in a series of children’s games with a gruesome twist to win the final 45.6 billion won (38.7 million USD) prize.
The series was released on September 17 and received an overwhelming response from viewers worldwide but it has also been criticised for showing violence and gore.
Many businesses around the world have run Squid Game style promotions to ride the wave of popularity.
