Former Democratic Alliance leader, Helen Zille, casted her special vote at Pinelands High School in Cape Town. Zille is the former leader of the party and since 2019 serves as the Chairperson of its federal executive.

Zille defended the controversial posters that were put up by the party in Phoenix, Kwazulu-Natal. There was massive outrage when the party put up posters saying “The ANC called you racists, we call you heroes”. Members of the mostly Indian community in Phoenix are now facing charges for having allegedly murdered black people passing through the community during the civil unrest in July.

The special vote is cast by people who are working on Election Day or cannot reach the voting stations because of age or ill health. South Africans will vote in the 2021 local government elections on Monday 1 November.
