Democratic Alliance (DA) federal executive chair, Helen Zille, casted her special vote at Pinelands High School in Cape Town. When questioned about the conditions in poor townships compared to service delivery in the leafy suburbs of Cape Town, Zille claimed poor people live a much better life in Cape Town than anywhere else in South Africa.

The City of Cape Town is often criticised for being anti-poor, as they have recently passed municipal bylaws which fines homeless people for living on the streets. The City’s law enforcement division is often called out by human rights bodies for their heavy handedness towards poor and homeless people.

South Africa holds it 2021 local government elections on Monday 1 November.
